John Jackman, Energy Innovator of the Year Nomination, 2014
by Ed Mills
I've known John Jackman for almost 25 years. We came together a project back in the early 90s which was not successful. But during the course of this time, John created a project, he called Power Control. It is a system of intelligent power factor correction, harmonic suppression, voltage variance suppression and power holding tank for delayed power loss in a main alternating current environment.
Like many innovators/inventors, his invention was new to the marketplace and was not readily accepted. In addition, his system used capacitors, which were not used since the early 1990s. They were a risk then, and the presumption was/is they are still a risk. Very few were willing to take that risk. Given those conditions, John's system, and his Power Control Company, did not rapidly take off.
Power Control Company Services are to Correct Power Factor Error (PFE) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). These engineering services: (a) test, analyze and make recommendations concerning electrical systems, and (2) provide the manufacturing, installation and monitoring of tailored, corrective equipment to eliminate Power Factor Error (PFE) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
PFE accounts for an average monthly energy loss of 22%, which is a significant cost to both the Government and private sector. [Essentially, end users are paying full price for the total meter count, but are using only 78%.] Capacitors correct this problem, but they burn out yearly, negating their cost-effectiveness. THD results from the use of multiple electronic devises and accounts for 3% of energy loss. THD destroys capacitors, invades circuitry, slows/destroys motors, causes computers to crash, and makes ground wires very dangerous.
Power Control's tailored, corrective equipment of harmonic filters and oversized capacitors simultaneously addresses both PFE and THD. PFE is corrected to .95 or better and THD decreased to below 5%.
Experience of many years has shown Power Control engineering services and tailored installations will produce the following results at each transformer/power center:
a. correct Power Factor Error (PFE) to .95 or better;
b. decrease Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to below 5%;
c. extend the life of associated capacitors from one year to ten years;
d. drastically increase rated motor output of all electrical motors; and
e. balance fluctuations in electrical power to a stable condition, significantly extending the life of any and all electrical equipment.
In general, Power Control Services and recommended equipment provides a return on investment of less than two years, an ongoing significant cost savings for years to come, and, for governmental facilities in the United States, compliance with the Presidential Order of April, 2002 requiring [at least] a 10% reduction in energy consumption. And actually, the nature and extent of the anticipated results of Power Control's technology are verifiable.
Acceptance of John's innovative technology is starting to grow despite many obstacles. The military and major companies are currently using his system. The cost savings to the State of Utah, to individual companies and the reduction in wear and tear to equipment is remarkable. The potential for job growth in Utah and elsewhere is enormous.
He is a credit to his community for his ability to maintain and sustain his idea through all of the obstacles. I highly recommend him for this honor.
Respectfully,
Ed Mills
